It was a gorgeous morning in Honolulu, Hawaii that would soon alter the course of history. Imagine being woken up by bombs and a thunder of planes. Your fellow officers running for cover as the US naval fleet diminishes. It was every soldier’s nightmare. December 7, 1941 was certainly a day that would live in infamy. Pearl Harbor was a war zone filled with fire, smoke, and carnage. This once destroyed harbor is now a place of peace and beauty. A museum has replaced a portion of the site. Every aspect of this astounding place has been perfectly crafted to take each and every visitor on a trip to the past during one of the hardest times in US history. Palm trees, exotic plants of every color, and coconuts line the paths creating a sense of calmness. Children can be seen running around to different exhibits looking at the torpedos, missiles, ship parts and artifacts. The harbor itself will have you staring in amazement as you watch the sun shimmer off each wave that passes. Islands surround the area everywhere you look in the distance. Each one had its own shade of green. Not a single one was like the last. Something seems out of place, though, as you scan the clear waters of the harbor. An occasional chunk of rusty metal can be spotted sticking out of the water. How odd? Each piece of metal belongs to a sunken warship. A massive machine of destruction once stood in those places. All it took was two well placed torpedos to bring the giants down. Frightened men descended into the waters along with the ships. Darkness would soon follow, and the yells would fade away. There was no escape. Among the beauty of the island you can still find fragments of history like this scattered throughout. How could a place of war be transformed into something so breathtaking?
