As a nurse, it is important to understand what QSEN is, its competencies and how it influences the art of nursing to improve the care provided to patients. Every part of the QSEN initiative is important for a different reason and impacts healthcare in order for nursing to remain competent, collaborative, compassionate, and most importantly, safe care. All of these items are part of being a healthcare worker and should be kept in mind every single day. These principles not only represent nurses and their actions but also help engage patients and their families in their own care to create a dynamic partnership of healthcare which respects those rights of patients and increases the quality of care and safety. (PHARM book) QSEN, or Quality and Safety Education for Nurses, is an initiative that includes implementing several categories of competencies in order to fill the gap in nursing care that were made apparent by patient outcomes and nursing difficulties. As a nurse, that individual is responsible for complex care, problem solving and critical thinking. They much have practical knowledge of many different types of drugs, dosages, interactions as well as having their own clinical judgement when it comes to drug administration. Nursing accountability for errors falls upon not only their individual actions but also those whose professions fall under their supervision such as LPN’s and UAP’s. When a medical error does occur it is the ethical responsibility of the nurse to report it immediately with a full report of all events. These types of reports are meant to ensure these types of mistakes are properly addressed and investigated to prevent harm from other patients that may be in similar situations. (NURSING
