I am often an educational nurse preceptor for nursing students that come to my floor for clinical. When I take on a student, I accept that this is a learning environment and take accountability for the student in place of the adjunct/nurse educator are not available or present. I realize that the student’s actions fall under my supervision. The student in this scenario gave the patient 10 milligrams (mg) of Morphine instead of the 2 mg as ordered for pain relief. I have a real problem on how this was related to me about my student. It was insinuated that my student inadvertently or intentionally placed the patient in danger. Where was the nurse that accepted the responsibility to watch this unlicensed student? The student looks for guidance, assistance, and a watchful eye on every aspect of performing nursing duties. I feel that nurse preceptor is ultimately responsible for the safety of the patient in all aspects, including implementations from a nursing student. According to the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) (2017), section §215.10.
