Introduction

Within any group of people working together, they bring different goals, values, ideas, power levels, and differences in preferences, style, outlook, background knowledge, and skills of leadership and understanding as well as targets and goals that may delay decisions and a reduced standard of care. If people do not agree this creates an atmosphere, which is not conducive to delivering an acceptable standard of care to our patients. This assignment will explore what I have learned about providing leadership for improvement as I have worked on my leadership initiative of the Hospital Safety Huddle (HSH) see figure 1 below. I had nurtured my team to work together and use upon each other’s strengths and weaknesses to get the HSH implemented. Having used affiliative and coaching styles in my leadership to my team by Goleman etal (2002), I made sure the team felt supported and appreciated. I was surprised Prudence felt Francis was undermining her and disrespecting her as I always thought my team members would take some of my principles from my leadership and learning styles.
It made me feel and possibly, I was partly to blame for this as part of my leadership style. It may have come across as I was favouring one over the other. Francis feeling I was giving Prudence tasks he should lead given the bigger role in the project and Prudence feeling I gave Francis a bigger role. I felt uncomfortable when confronted by Prudence and Francis’s conflict I failed to understand it as well as the conflict process as well as from a lack of training in how to handle interpersonal confrontations effectively.
It also made me feel that I may have shown favouritism to another employee and I was not taking into account other issues that may be stemming in the group which were outside the HSH implementation. It was challenging to see that kind of behaviour for me. It showed flaws in my leadership and as expose many issues I was probably not ready to deal with until the HSH would have been
