How would you feel if you were going to college to play a sport and you wouldn’t have to worry about money? The idea of going to college of your choice and getting paid to play for that college team. From throwing a football to jumping over a hurdle or even catching a fish could promise yourself money in your pocket. If you are an athlete deciding which college to attend are going to ask yourself, how much will I learn or how much will I get paid. Depending on how much is offered can sway an athlete’s decision. With money that you put toward your academics have you ever what the money went towards. If college athletes were able to get paid your money wouldn’t fund the school it would pay an athlete. Since the topic as become largely debated many different perceptions have come out through the research. Having different perceptions helps show that there are people who support the payment and people who oppose the payment of athletes. “As a former athletic department scholarship recipient, I answer a qualified “no.” “Salary” is an inappropriate term. I advocate amateurism, believing that sports are educational with valuable lesson learned.” (Joperd 10) In this quote from a former athlete, her perception is clearly shown when she states that she advocates amateurism. This perception shows that as a former athlete that she feels that athletes are there for the education propose. “Intercollegiate athletes should be paid a salary for participating in sports. The demands of competition are such that during the season athletes can't hold jobs, so where are they going to get the money to survive?” (Joperd 10) This quote provides the perspective that the college athletes should be paid because they can’t hold a job because the demand of their sport. With a sport taking up all the athletes spare time it is impossible to find and keep a job. Without a source of income, the athlete is often broke. Both of the sources provide strong perspectives on the topic of should athletes be paid. “Overall, 54% of all respondents believed student-athletes should be paid for intercollegiate athletics participation.” (Schneider and Raymond vol.35) This quote provides a statistic that states more student’s athletes want to be paid then those who do not. Having views of both sides of the argument from the players and backing up statistics, the perspective of athletes has a major role in the fight for the payment for student
