While taking this class during my two years as a Registered Nurse in the Emergency Department, I have gained better insight into the social determinants of health and health equity. I have learned that Social Determinants of Health guide the nurse toward culturally competent care through non-medical factors that allow the nurse to identify health disparities. This allows the nurse to advocate for health equity. Social determinants of health (SDOH) in nursing refer to the non-medical factors influencing a person's health outcomes. These factors include socioeconomic status, education, employment, social support networks, physical environment, and access to healthcare services.
