In classrooms today, the main focus is on math, and reading because these subjects are on the standardized tests. Depending on the district and state, there may be outlines of the curriculum. For example, all of the elementary schools in Albany County’s district follow the same math outline. With this being said, I do think it is important to follow these outlines. When following these outlines it is important that teachers do not focus on the assessment. Teachers’ should be focused on the students’ learning and how they are retaining the information. After considering all of these aspects teachers have to consider how we want to teach them. As teachers’, we should not teach to the standard, but many teachers get caught up in teaching to the test. Alfie Kohn is a gentleman who has a lot to say about the education system. In the article “Do you think that just because you're a new teacher, you can't create meaningful change in your classroom? Being a direct teacher is needed sometimes, but there are other times where the students need to have meaningful lessons that are engaging. Creating a curriculum will be difficult and as teachers we will have to make our principal, and district happy, but we can do this in many ways that are engaging and hands on for students. This will be more challenging compared to direct teaching, but the results of hands on learning is worth the effort. As new
