Student Resource Officer
As a young boy you learn to idolize those who teach you, those who protect you, and those who and those who mentor you. Student Resource Officers, for many kids, can often embody this throughout life. Through much of my childhood and early teen years, the idea of becoming an SRO had never crossed my mind. I spent more time learning and watching what my school officer does, the more I learned the more my gratitude grew for the men and woman who protect me. However, there is more to what a SRO does then just acting as a layer of protection. In an article written by Tony Guerra, titled “What Is the Job Description of a School Resource Officer?”, Guerra presents the following facts: from 1980 to 1999, there were 99 reported school attacks, since 2000 there have been 189. Over the past decade and half the number of school shooting/attacks, has nearly doubled. The boom in terrorism at the school levels has pushed the job of an SRO forward as far as professionalism and seriousness are concerned. A student resource officer position uses to be a very laid back job for those who are getting ready to retire from the police force, due to the flexible hours and how quiet action once was at schools. Being an SRO in its simplest form is essentially 2 acts, protecting and guiding; the guiding of young men and women and the choices they can and will make that can impact their life on a large and small scale, and the protection of those same men and women. Well for many officers this may be the career path they had been heading down for a while, as that’s what they have ever wished to achieve. For others, the job offers great experience and is a good alternative to field work. For those same people the job maybe a stepping stone onto something bigger, such as becoming a sheriff and for a few reaching ranks as high as captain. The job offers amazing learning experience for young officers who wish to work for the force for a long period of time.

While the wages are nothing to write home about. A steady career as a resource officer is a suitable job economically for a person supporting a family.
