Why Do Later School Start Time?

It’s almost 10:00 o’clock at night and you’re just beginning to start your homework. You’ve had a long day of school, and you just got home from your extracurricular activity. Your team had a long conditioning practice, and all you want to do is shower and go to bed. But because school didn't start until 9:00 am, everything started and ended later, leaving you to do homework at night. Now you will have to stay up late to finish homework, and then get ready for bed. Most nights you won't go to bed until 11 or midnight. How terrible is it for a middle school student to have to stay up so late to do their homework? Or even get home from other activities in general that late night?This is me, along with thousands of other kids experiencing this. …show more content…
It may seem like kids will be gaining more sleep, but this is not very true. Kids will not gain sleep. They may lose it or no change will be made at all. One argument made by a high schooler at WW-P High School South, named Connor Florend, is in a newspaper. Stated in “The Pirates Eye” he says, “This could cause them to stay up later, with the belief that they could ‘sleep in’ till a later time.” This is very true. From a personal perspective, not having to wake up quite so early, switches teens' brains to thinking they can go to bed later. This means that they do not really get any more sleep on weekends. Many kids in Jr High and High School participate in some sort of extracurricular activity or part time job. Oftentimes more than one. Pushing school back, will push the end time back, making other activities after school start and end later as well. As previously said in the opening, I am one of thousands of kids who end their activity at 9:00 pm, or late at night. Even pushing school back an hour will involve pushing those activities back that much more. That means kids will get home later, still have to do homework, etc. This will result in no more sleep, because students will be going to bed much later. “Newpaltz.edu” states, “later school start times—and therefore later school end times—will limit students’ ability to participate in sports, other after-school activities, and part-time employment.” It also says, “Another study found that in urban settings later start times did result in less student participation in extracurricular and social activities and also created conflicts for students who worked after school, sometimes diminishing their earnings (Freeman and Wahlstorm, 1997).” This is an example of a study performed, showing evidence of later school start times, taking away from students and their lives There would be no way to keep a healthy balance if school ended later.
