This past year was my first season of wrestling. I had no experience, yet I was ready to learn. Before the season officially started, we’d work out and lift weights, to prepare us for the season. We’d run miles after school on the track and the stairs, they were intensive workouts. I was happy because no one judged me because of my inexperience, and my teammates were very accepting. I made lots of true friends this season. When the season started, we started doing a lot of drills, and I learned quickly. The signature setup that I liked doing was a Russian tie into a single-leg takedown. I had the setup for a pin available, so I went for it. I was so excited when the ref blew that whistle. I smiled so hard as the audience clapped for me, and I felt like I was on top of the world. After I shook my opponent’s coach’s hand, my head coach gave me a big high five and congratulated me. I went into the hallway to call my dad and tell him the important news. He told me he was proud of me, and he knew I could do it. Then, I walked back into the room to watch one of my teammates, as my other teammates congratulated me. After the tournament, walking back to our van, one of my coaches said, “Good job today, Vaeh”. This meant a lot to me because this specific coach didn’t give out personal compliments often. The almost two-hour-long ride back to Millard South was so special to me, I was exhausted but so proud of myself. My coach, teammates, and I all conversed and there was positive energy all around. Although, I didn’t make it to state I’m confident that I’ll make it next season. Walking in at the beginning of the season with no experience, I was shocked that I even made it to the district.
