The original reason for separating the documents in the Pentateuch was the different names that were used for God. In J, God is known as Yahweh; however, in other sources, this was not the case. In P and E, God is known as God or God Almighty throughout Genesis, but during the time of Moses, the divine name Yahweh was revealed. Because there is inconsistency about whether God was known as Yahweh before the time of Moses, it was possible to isolate different sources in Genesis. After this, other characteristics could be differentiated for each of the sources.

The passages that use the name Yahweh, Yahweh is described using anthropomorphic language. In J, Judah is the location of many of the narratives regarding the ancestors of Israel. Also, Jacob’s son, Judah, is significant in the ancestral narratives in J. The principal theme in J is the theme of the promise to Abraham of land, descendants, and blessing. J is usually dated to the tenth century because the Promised Land in J includes the territory that David and Solomon controlled in the tenth century BCE.
