Year-Round Schooling
The traditional school schedule was designed to suit agrarian society, but now, times undergo change to where the year-round school schedule is more suited to the present society’s needs. The agrarian society was farmers who needed their children for extra help during the harvest season. Now, as technology does much of the farming labor, children do not stand to waist the summer break losing their knowledge but continue to attend school to keep their education growing. It is a slow process, but more schools are switching to year-round school schedules. In 1986, 408 were on year-round schedules and the numbers continue to increase yearly (Zubrzycki). Teachers who work in year-round schools are able to help students more, build better relationships with their students, and provide for themselves financially. Teachers care about their students and desire the best for them. With the year-round schooling system, it is easier for teachers to help the struggling students get back on their academic track with periodic breaks throughout the year. It also provides teachers with more time to plan their curriculum according to the pace of their students. At traditional schools, teachers become disconnected with their students during the long summer break. However, teachers at year-round schools gain deeper relationships with students, resulting in a better education (Lyttle 5). Besides caring only for their students, teachers must also manage the care of their own needs. Year-round schooling provides more money and better benefits for teachers who work all year. In year-round schools, teacher burnout and turnover rates are much lower than traditional schools (Naylor 5). Beneficial teachers aspire the best for their students, and year-round schools help them do that by allowing extra help and a slower curriculum because not all students can work efficiently at a fast …show more content…
Economically, year-round schooling extracts the major income of various tourist locations and other venues, because they rely on the traditional summer break. It also eliminates away the summer jobs that some students need for their family, or it excludes educational trips that some students experience in the summer to advance their knowledge. Although those summer jobs and educational trips may be helpful for some, the overall population of students benefits more from staying in school on a year-round school schedule. However, changing from one school system to another adds extra costs, including the cost of powering the school facilities year-round. Is the cost worth it?
