Foreign Affliction Three dead, metal shards mangled with flesh, sirens and voices shrieking in alarm, it was a race to terror. On April 15, 2013, two homemade bombs detonated near the finish line of the annual Boston marathon, instantly injuring hundreds and killing three people, the FBI tracked down the assailants, two Muslim American brothers who had previously immigrated to America from Russia with previous run ins with the FBI and the Russian intelligence. Investigators revealed that “there appeared to be no concrete links between the Tsarnaev brothers and any larger plots or terrorist groups, Dzhokhar revealed to investigators that he and his brother had obtained the plans for the bombs from Inspire, an online newsletter published by al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP). That led analysts who were following the investigation to conclude that the Tsarnaevs were ‘self-radicalized’ ” (Ray). An abundance of Americans’ perspectives have changed to support anti-immigration following the Boston marathon bombings as some are fearful of the attacks by Islamic terrorists and are led to wrongfully discriminate against all Muslims. During the investigation, it was found that “the F.B.I. fail to identify Tamerlan Tsarnaev, the older brother, who had been fingered as a potential terrorist risk two years before the bombing and interviewed by field agents. Within 24 hours of the bombing, on April 15, 2013, investigators focused on images of the brothers in surveillance tapes recovered from the scene. Yet they had no names” (Gessen). Following the investigation, it soon became apparent that the FBI had failed to identify the immigrant attackers as future terrorists two years earlier even though there were already previous indications leading to concern over whether Americans were being protected by the current foreign policies regarding immigration. Republican candidates in the recent election took to their conservative stances, with Rubio “defending himself on Fox, Rubio took a hard line: ‘People who haven't been here very long are going to be deported. People overstaying visas are going to have to be deported.
