The challenges that women have endured to obtain leadership roles in the workforce have been blindsided by men for decades. Today, women are slowly climbing the corporate ladder, taking control, and proving once and for all that, they can be effective and excel in leadership.
Diversity is a key component for women leaders who want to bridge the gap between themselves and their men colleagues. Diversity has different meanings to different people. It is also interpreted differently by many corporations. In Opportunities and Challenges of Workplace Diversity, Canas & Sondak (2014) state one of several definitions on diversity given by Thomas and Ely which reads, “it is the various backgrounds and experiences that create people’s identities and outlooks” (p. 11). With regards to diversity being related to how one experiences work, Thomas and Ely (1996) stated in Making Differences Matter that:

One leader who has managed to spearhead their background in diversity into a company that has “diversity and inclusion embedded into every aspect of our business” is Michele C. Meyer-Shipp (Prudential D&I Homepage, para. 1).
When Michelle Meyer-Shipp began her career at Prudential she already had a long diversity and law background under her belt. In Diversity Woman (2017), it states:
• She is a graduate of Seton Hall University School of Law.
• She led the diversity and inclusion efforts in Global Wealth Management at Merrill Lynch.
• She is Co-Chair of the Asia Society Global Talent and Diversity Council.
• Served as General Counsel of the Waterfront Commission of New York
