On average, every nine out of ten days, four or more people are shot in an incident, not including the shooter, theguardian.com states. Gun control is defined as laws that restrict access to certain firearms, and purchasing guns. It is a controversial issue because it involves a dispute between sides which hold opposing views. Those who support gun control believe that a national assault weapon ban would reduce mass shootings, and approximately 60,000 people are killed or injured by firearms each year. Furthermore, advocates of gun control strongly feel that if there’s gun control laws, it will reduce homicide, suicide, unintentional shootings, etc. On the other hand, those who oppose gun control are convinced that guns don’t kill people, people are the ones who kill, and that criminals can find other ways to get a gun, leaving law abiding citizens defenseless. In other words, banning guns would stop mass shootings and school shootings. For example, Nearly 23,000 guns sales were sold to dangerous people who did not even have a complete background check in Charleston between 2010 and 2016. In fact after the three-day period has expired, federal law allows gun stores to sell a gun to a prospective buyer, even though the background check is not complete. Furthermore, research proves that Semiautomatic, military-style firearms are designed for one purpose: to kill people, and quickly. They have no place on the streets, and are a threat to police officers and civilians. In fact, most school shootings and mass shootings are used with dangerous semi automatic rifles, that kill many people in these shootings.
