She dealt with many inconveniences, including slave owners and slave catchers. This thing, which was called the underground railroad, led 700 slaves to pursue a path of being a free person. This is an amazing system with very limited failures. In her 19 trips, she herself led 300 people to becoming free. Although becoming a free person with a new life sounds amazing, some slaves didn't want to go with her. There were many reasons for this, like some were already free, just living and working with slaves. If they were captured while helping slaves escape, they would get punished very harshly. It went as far as taking away their freedom.Her dad was a prime example of this as he didn't even want to see her spo if they asked him he could truthfully say he did not see Hariet. Hariet spent a year in Philly before she decided she wanted to make this trip back. She had a husband back in Maryland, a free man and her whole family who all worked on the farm. Over the past year, Hariet thought she was sending messages to her husband, but the word just wasn't coming back. When she finally decided to make the trip back, John Bowley did not like this idea, he thought it was going to ruin the whole idea of the underground railroad.
