School start times should be pushed back an hour to set students up for success in the classroom. There are many studies that prove the majority of teens are sleep deprived and are unable to concentrate early in the morning, especially in high school. Students would be more willing to go to school if their bodies are rested and their brains are stimulated. In my case, I am more ready to learn in my afternoon classes If we pushed back school start times and hours, teenagers would significantly improve their sleep schedule and hopefully be less tired throughout the day, As students get in a groove and figure out how to maximize the amount of sleep they get in a night, they will have more energy and eagerness to learn. I always feel like I can learn better on late start days. Imagine being able to sleep 8 hours a night and go to school with no sleep deprivation. This should be the standard, not a dream. Another perspective is that late start times are unrealistic because of athletic bands and extracurriculars. This is not realistic because sports would only be pushed back an hour or so and this shouldn't cause an issue. If a student athlete has practice at 4 it should be over by 6, this is just in time for dinner and gives you time after for homework and/or club sports. Next, if school starts later it will end later, giving less time for important activities after school. I see where this is coming from, but I don't agree. Pushing back to school only takes an hour of their after school time, if we are being realistic most teenagers lay in their bed scrolling for a large chunk of their afternoon, but, with later start times teens will be motivated to do homework and get things done.
