Recess; “the temporary withdrawal or cessation from the usual work or activity.” Back in the 17th century, a schoolmaster by the name of John Brinsley, decided that kids needed a break from their long school days. He thought that this break would be valuable for kids, so he made a recess. There is more to recess than kids just running around getting their energy out. An activity that has been the pinnacle of many’s childhood, has provided kids with the knowledge and social skills and has made healthy brain development possible for kids of all ages. With the overflowing amounts of benefits, eternal memories, and lessons recess creates, why cut it off from growing adolescents after grade school? 20% of teens battle with depression, so a recess could relieve them of that struggle by taking one of the many things they have to deal with, allowing for less worry and more academic improvement. Taking a break during a busy day to do active exercise helps the development of the prefrontal cortex, which strengthens the connection between the problem-solving and creative halves of the brain. These brain connections will help a student overall in their intellect. With the increase in difficulty of demanding classes, this break is very necessary for kids' success in high school. Recess has also been proven to help students in their concentration, memory, and attention levels, which has a positive correlation to performance in academics. More attention means more learning. With all the things that go on in high school, from depression to highly demanding and taxing classes, this break in a day is essential for the individual student to accept. With one of the leading causes of death in the United States, obesity is a major problem, more specifically childhood obesity, which has gone up 300% in the past 55 years. The answer is a recess. During recess, classmates can talk and relate to each other. Also, recess gives students time for non-organized rules by teachers. This gives them the chance to negotiate and solve problems. The skill of communicating and negotiating is crucial to having success in your job and life. This social time gives students time to connect and kindle their relationships.
