He shows this when the text states on pg.14, “He was also ridiculed by other children at school.” This shows how much he likes Stacey even though he’s black. He doesn’t care at all because even though he’s bullied for hanging out with Stacey he’s still friends with him. The text also states on the same page, “And had more than once showed up with wide red welts on his arm.” This shows that Jeremy is so willing to prove that black and white people can be friends that he would even get hurt to preserve his friendship. TJ just tries to use Stacey; he does this on pg.81, “He seen Miz Logan startin’ toward ’em and he slipped Stacey the notes. Well, Stacey didn’t see Miz Logan comin’ when he took them notes, and by the time he saw her it was too late to get rid of ’em. Wasn’t nothin’ Miz Logan could do but whip him. Failed him too.’‘And ole T.J. just sat there and ain’t said a word,’ interjected Clarence, laughing.” This shows TJ just using Stacey so that he wouldn’t get in trouble. A real friend like Jeremy wouldn’t have done this. Another way TJ shows his slickness is when, on pg.141 “The coat was too big for me and . . . and T.J. said it made me look like . . . like a preacher . . . and he said since it fit him just right, he’d . . . he’d take it off my hands till I grow into it, then thataway all the guys would stop laughing at me and calling me preacher.’” TJ uses his talking skills to make Stacey give him his new jacket. And TJ taunts him until he gives in and he doesn’t want the jacket
