Vincent Willem van Gogh was born in Zundert, Netherlands on March 30, 1853. Under his parents, Theodorus van Gogh and Anna Cornelius Carbentus, he was their oldest child. He had two brothers: Theo and Cor, and three sisters: Elisabeth, Anna, and Willemina. There were quite a few Vincents in the Van Gogh family, so it is unclear who exactly he was named after. Exactly a year before Vincent was born, his parents had birthed a stillborn which they had also named Vincent. His grandfather. uncle, and great-grandfather’s uncle all also shared the same name. As Van Gogh got older, he made it extremely clear to his brother Theo that he found his childhood to be dark and melancholy. After transferring through a copious amount of schools at a young age, he left school to work at his Uncle Cent’s art dealership, Goupil & Cie. In 1873, Van Gogh was at the epitome of happiness. He was thriving at work and more in love with art than he’d ever been. This all ended shortly after Vincent was rejected by his landlord’s daughter. Van Gogh’s outlook on life after that became more and more pessimistic, so much as that his father and uncle had him transferred over to work in Paris.
