Vincent Van Gogh Vincent Van Gogh was born in Groot-Zundert, Holland on March 30, 1853. He was the second oldest of six children. His father, Theodorus Van Gogh, was a pastor and his mother, Anna Cornelia Carbentus, was the daughter of a bookseller. In his younger years, Van Gogh never showed any interest in art. Van Gogh attended two boarding schools where he excelled in languages. He dropped out of school in 1868 and never completed any formal education. Van Gogh became an apprentice at the headquarters of the international art dealers Goupil & Cie in Paris in 1869. Later, Van Gogh was transferred to the London office of Goupil & Cie. During this time, he became very depressed and turned to God. Van Gogh felt a calling to preach the word of the gospel, and found his path in ministry. Subsequently, Van Gogh was dismissed as a pastor in 1880 for his overly enthusiastic commitment to his faith; he then decided he could be an artist and remain in God’s service. A year later, Van Gogh moved back into his parents’ home, where he fell in love with his cousin, Kee Vos-Stricker. She rejected Van Gogh which caused the family to split. His brother Theo assisted him with a move back to Hague. He later made his way to work at the Hague branch of the firm, where he stayed for nearly a decade. Much like Café Terrace at Night, Van Gogh stuck to using different shades of blue and yellow throughout this painting. The sky looks as if the wind is blowing the in the night sky light. In his earlier years, he felt his calling was to be a preacher. The eleven stars and moon have been believed to have a biblical meaning. The story of Joseph found in Genesis 37:9 in the Old Testament of the bible states: “Look, I have had another dream” he said, “I thought I saw the sun, the moon and eleven stars, bowing to me”
