Over the course of one school year, English has been a journey. Exploring multiple genres of literature, different themes, and a variety of interesting topics. Moreover, this year we explored many dark topics and dystopian stories. Reading books like Night, Fahrenheit 451, and Antigone; videos like “Three Identical Strangers”, The Truman Show, and Night at the Garden that show the dark human nature, fictionally and non-fictionally. With that, the big question is: do you let someone control you or do you get your freedom? Freedom is better than restriction at most times, and it’s always better to be free than being controlled. Later in life, they started their own restaurant together. Freely being together brought them joy whilst being controlled and kept away from each other brought despair. In Fahrenheit 451, Montag had no clue what books held in them because the government banned them. He decided to sneak books after a girl named Clarisse and others inspired him. After finding “The magic.in.books.” (79), he loved reading. He wanted to read freely and at times, he wasn’t afraid to show his love for books. He was on a train “carrying the Bible open” (74) in public with no shame and no care, even though he knew the consequences if he got caught. And when he got caught, he fled the city and found a group of outsiders who also loved to read. The freedom of reading brought Montag joy, even though it came with some sacrifices. The Truman Show is a great example of how freedom is better than being controlled by others. In The Truman Show, Truman married a wife whom he didn’t love with his whole heart, and she didn’t love him with her whole heart. Truman loved Sylvia, a girl who tried to tell him the truth: his whole life had been fake and he was on a TV show. His obsession with Sylvia is shown when “Lauren’s father” takes Sylvia
