Kafka uses Gregor’s family’s reaction to his metamorphosis to convey the limits of sympathy. In the beginning of the story Gregor is perceived as an income to his family rather than family or even human. His parents seem to never sympathize with him and his problems they expect him to always hold the house down regardless.
