The metamorphosis is a short novella written by Franz Kafka, it is the one that introduced me to the author and with The Trial, one of his most famour works. It starts with our main character Gregor Samsa, a salesman, who after waking up discovers that he has turned into a giant insect.
The bizarre situation contrasts with our protagonist’s reaction, taking it lightly as a mild disturbance, he is more worried of not being able to go to work than the fact that he is now a monstrous vermin. This cold attitude towards this event sets a surreal tone that characterizes the story, as the story progresses Samsa worries about his job, his family, particuly his sister and the family’s debt over his transformation, as if everyone except him were able to grasp the seriousness of the situation.
