Introduction
Diabetes is one of the most known long term diseases that has no cure. Diabetes or diabetes mellitus, is a condition where there is too much glucose in the bloodstream. Diabetes mellitus is a long-lasting disorder that affects your body's capability to use the energy found in food. There are three major types of diabetes: type 1 diabetes, type 2 diabetes, and gestational diabetes. All of the types of Diabetes mellitus have something similar about them. A body that is not affected by the disease diabetes normally breaks down the food you eat into a sugar called glucose. If the disease is not treated and left unattended it can cause major damages and in time can cause heart disease, stroke, kidney disease, and nerve damage. The statistics of Diabetes has changed over the years and it will continue to change over the years either in a bad way or for the better but it’s not certain. The prevalence of diabetes in 2015 was that “30.3 million Americans, or 9.4% of the population, had diabetes. Approximately 1.25 million American children and adults have type 1 diabetes. Out of the 30.3 million adults with diabetes, 23.1 million were diagnosed, and 7.2 million were undiagnosed.” The statistics of diabetes not only includes the percentage of who has the disease but it also factors race, location, and or poverty. The article “Disparities in Diabetes: The Nexus of race, poverty, and place” talks about the race difference in diabetes prevalence which include the differences in socioeconomic factors, family history of diabetes, biological factors and environmental factors. Most signs and symptoms of diabetes mellitus are overseen because of the long-lasting progression of the disease. People don’t notice the signs of this disease or see it as a big problem because unlike any other disease the consequences of high blood sugar (hyperglycemia) are not seen immediately. Most people are not conscious that serious damage can start way before symptoms become seen. The lack of information of this disease is unfortunate because knowing and recognizing the early symptoms can help get the disease under control and prevent complications.
