Ultimately the main goal of a liberal arts education was to determine how they would play their part in the civic life. Throughout the course of time, subject matter extended to include arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy in the liberal arts education. As a result, liberal arts colleges on a field of subjects such as arts, humanities, social science, mathematics, and natural sciences. The "Artes liberals are rooted in classical antiquity and refer to the general skills (=artes) a free person (=liberals) needed to contribute meaningfully to society”(Dr. Michael Thomas). This meant a liberal arts education was exclusively only available to free person. Many other types of education train students to develop a specialization for a specific job. However, liberal arts education provides the ultimate job training. Liberal arts develop a skill for critical thinking, analyzing information, and effective expression of ideas. Employers also see more potential in liberal arts graduates because these graduates have developed key skills to adapt in a changing workplace. “Employers are recognizing that while employees can be taught the technical skills of a job, the "people" and communication skills that liberal arts majors possess aren't as easy to find or teach” (Karen Abigail Williams). Employers have a strong desire for transferable skills, which are skills that can be brought upon one situation to another. Transferable skills such as communicating skills, problem solving skills, and working well with others are key skills employer look for. A liberal arts education background also looks well when applying for graduate schools such as health care, law, business, and many other fields.
